Jonathan took us through creating a watercolour painting using pen and ink, where we all used the same image. He recommends Picsabay as images are free for commercial use.
Start with pencil and then pen over the top. Pencil is only as an outline to place objects - the pen should be the detail and mostly in the nearground not distance.
Ensure pens are waterproof or resistant. Pen pressure should be lighter for the distance or you can invest in a variety of pens with differing nib thicknesses.
Use a pen to draw trees with zig zag styling. For reeds, use the pen from base getting lighter with pressure at top.
Remove pencil marks after.
Use wet on wet technique for sky, making the area wet before applying paint. Cobalt and little purple mixing cobalt and crimson. Take tissue and roll to create clouds. Use same cols in the waters reflection.
To create Greens mix olive green / cadmium yellow with a touch of lemon yellow. Make 2 lots of paint and in the 2nd lot, add Ultramarine blue for sky green.
Use ultramarine with burnt Sienna for dark areas.
Use Wet on dry technique for the distance, painting a little dark colour on edges and then filling with lighter yellow. Use a touch of dark colours on areas and leave small white areas for highlights.
If using a hair dryer, dry both sides of the paper.
